Which Social Media Channels to Use for Your Business
How many social media platforms should I have?
In case you haven’t heard, social media is all about building genuine connections with an audience interested in your products and/or services. It’s not as simple as hitting “publish” and watching the sales roll in –it takes time, effort, and a consistent strategy.
So, if you’re new to the social media world, it’s best to start off with 2-3 platforms that align with your target audience, so you have plenty of time to create great content and build those connections. The last thing you want to do is take on 7 social media accounts and not have the time for it. Social media is all about showing up and providing value –and if you’re only in it half the time, there’ll be a disconnect, and people won’t show up to see you. It’s almost like if your favorite show was on every Tuesday at 7pm and then switched its schedule to air “whenever it felt like.” It would probably frustrate you, and eventually you’d stop watching –sort of like your social media followers… you get the gist.
Now that you have a general idea of how many platforms to take on at first, you’ll want to select which ones. Here’s some of my favorite platforms that work for a variety of niches:

Facebook is the most commonly used social media platform across all age ranges. It’s also pretty evenly utilized by both males and females, making it a great platform for most businesses. Although the organic reach is at an all-time low (and can sometimes feel like you’re talking to a brick wall), their paid ads feature is excellent if you have a little extra room in your marketing budget. This is because you can essentially reach anyone you want with Facebook’s advanced audience settings. In addition, Facebook is a great platform for sharing your blogs, news updates, large photo albums, live videos, and more.

Owned by Facebook, Instagram is also subject to the ever-changing (and frustrating) algorithm, making it very hard for users to grow organically. Offering a similar ads feature as Facebook, Instagram has advertising capabilities and can actually work simultaneously with Facebook to run your ads on both accounts. If ad placements aren’t in your budget, there’s still hope for you to grow organically (lol).
Instagram’s hashtags are a great way to target your ideal audience so they can find you when they’re searching for things they like. The key is to be strategic with it, though –ask yourself what it is your audience is searching for. Try to get in their head. Engagement is also huge on this social media platform –so if you choose to use it, make sure you have a little time set aside to login each day.
Keep in mind, the app is geared towards a younger crowd –most of which are looking for lifestyle inspiration, eye-catching images, and fun behind-the-scenes footage. So, if you’re a blogger, photographer, artist, or creative professional –Instagram would be great for you.
Twitter is a long-time favorite social media platform by many because of its remaining chronological feed (take that, algorithm!) and instant micro-updates. Though it’s geared towards the younger crowd, a lot of businesses are on it to provide support through social customer service, where company reps will actually communicate with their customers via the platform instead of email or phone.
It’s also a great platform for sharing multiple instant updates with your audience from live events, company outings, or just another day in the office. Twitter users typically tweet 10-15 times a day because the feed is chronological and will bury your content pretty quickly. With that said, I would recommend a social media scheduler so you can take care of it ahead of time, or make sure you have enough time to tweet consistently throughout the day.
Although I wouldn’t technically consider Pinterest a real “social media platform,” I’m putting it on my list because I believe most businesses underutilize it. The truth is, Pinterest is more like a visual search engine and should have an entirely separate strategy from your social media strategy in order to work for your business. In fact, Pinterest happens to be one of the best marketing tools out there used to leverage more traffic and sales to your website, blog, or online store for free.
While a majority of Pinterest’s active users are women, about half of its new users are men. Also, nearly 90% of people use Pinterest for planning purchases…and no, not everyone is using it for DIYs and recipes (but bloggers, take note). LinkedIn is a great networking platform for professionals, with a reach that’s slightly better than Facebook and Instagram. I tend to use this platform to share blog posts, or to network with other professionals inside and outside my niche.
Since this network was built to connect working professionals and businesses, you may need to think outside the box on how you can build a strong following here. This could be because some people aren’t using it as frequently as they would other social media sites, or simply because a lot of its content focuses on job opportunities, corporate culture, office life, etc.
I think LinkedIn is great for business coaches, marketing experts, and individuals –as opposed to “creative” businesses like, bloggers and photographers. But hey, you might want to see for yourself!
Video is the latest hype, as we’ve seen from Facebook live, IGTV –even Pinterest. And YouTube is no stranger to that. Anytime we hear of something crazy on the news, chances are –it’s on YouTube. And that’s because video is a great way to connect with your audience so they can relate to you on a more personal level.
Have you ever watched an influencer’s Instastory or YouTube video and felt like you were drawn to them because they were “so funny,” or “really energetic?” Well, you can thank video for that. There’s just something about video that’s much more enticing to a person than the written word. Think about it –people like visuals. It truly helps viewers connect with a brand on a different level.
Scared of the camera? Well, you might need to face your fears, considering there’s over 1 billion active monthly users on the platform crawling with potential customers! This channel is ideal for vloggers (video bloggers) and educators because people love searching for how-tos and tutorials –just be sure you’re able to put the time into it –your fans will look forward to seeing your face, so be consistent!
What’s the best social media channel for business?
It all boils down to where your audience is hanging out. If you’re still unsure of who your exact customers are, try looking in the analytics section of your website or current social media accounts.
